The Guardian 1994

Hijinx present a beautiful production of Ill Met by Moonlight – an intriguing and lyrical play by the ever popular Welsh playwright Charles Way.

This sadly will be Hijinx’s final Autumn tour specifically for community audiences in it’s current guise, as a result of a reduction in financial support from the Arts Council of Wales and it promises to be a most memorable one. With the usual trademarks of a fascinating story, uplifting music and a stunning set, Ill Met By Moonlight promises to be another great night out that everyone has come to expect from Hijinx.

Set on the border of Wales and England when rural superstition was rife, Gwarwyn-a-throt (Gat), a descendant of Puck, roams the countryside leaving a trail of mayhem in his wake. He is the last of the mystical Bwca and is prepared to go to any lengths to ensure the continuation of his race. The Bwca are the faerie “brownies” of Wales, but they have somewhat nastier tempers than their cousins elsewhere! So with his shape-changing interference, he attempts to thwart the growing love between two lonely country people. The results of his malicious meddling are both hilarious and tragic. Will he be triumphant, or will love and integrity win?

Commissioned and first toured in 1994 and again in 2001, Ill Met by Moonlight received outstanding audience and critical response for both productions. The 1994 production was part of the portfolio of work which earned Hijinx the BBC Wales Arts Award for Company of the Year.
